One of the major obstacles to economic prosperity for rural Angolans is the lack of access to grid-provided electricity. By investing in the large-scale expansion of the national electricity grid, the Sumbe-Gabela-Waku-Kungo (SGWK) transmission line project connects remote areas to a reliable, renewable source of electricity while reducing reliance on costly, polluting and inefficient diesel-powered generators. With the construction of new substations and over 300km of new transmission lines, SGWK connects over 150,000 rural Angolans to the grid, increasing day-to-day quality of life as well as expanding economic possibilities in previously isolated regions. Moreover, as the power from the national grid is primarily hydroelectric, SGWK contributes to the urgent transition from highly polluting diesel-powered solutions to clean, sustainable power sources.
